Impressive trial winner Almsgiver joins OTI

While an almsgiver is known for supplying food and money to others as an act of virtue, we’re hoping this Almsgiver will provide us with plenty to celebrate on the track!

The New Zealand-bred bay gelding is by dual Group 1 winner Contributer, whose sire credentials were bolstered this month when Lion’s Roar took out the Group 1 Randwick Guineas.

Almsgiver, an unraced three-year-old, demonstrated his impressive potential in two trials in New Zealand earlier this year. In both trials, he displayed a tenacious running style and exceptional acceleration to find the finish line strongly.

These performances caught the eye of renowned bloodstock agent Phill Cataldo, who has been instrumental in identifying and securing some of OTI’s most successful New Zealand-bred gallopers in the past.

OTI’s General Manager Shayne Driscoll said the team is thrilled to acquire Almsgiver, who they believe embodies all of the hallmarks of a top-class galloper.

“We’re thrilled to secure Almsgiver. He is set to arrive in Australia next week and will join Matthew Williams’ Warrnambool stables,” Driscoll said.

“We were attracted to the gelding by his breeding. His bloodlines indicate that he has the potential to be a top-quality 1600-2000m racehorse.

“He’s a slow maturing type and has been given time to really grow into himself. He has an imposing stature, and his trials demonstrate his promising athletic abilities.

“Not only is his sire Contributer making waves, but his dam, Dosh, has also had great success as a broodmare,” Driscoll commented.

Dosh (by Danske) has produced seven winners, including the Group 2 Wellington Guineas winner, Sacred Park, and Dynamic Eagle, who has amassed over AUD 600,000 in prizemoney in Hong Kong.

Almsgiver is expected to commence his racing career at the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival before being aimed toward mid-week city races. Early plans indicate that he will spell before resuming for a late spring campaign.
