The Purple Patch Continues for Grahame Begg Trained Romancer

With plenty of horses to watch over the next few weeks as we lead into spring, Romancer is another to follow after returning to the winner’s circle at Moonee Valley over the weekend, taking out the $125,000 Ladbrokes Odds Boost Handicap over 1519m.

The open race attracted some quality gallopers with the likes of Volkstok’n’barrell, last year’s Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes winner Magic Consol, Vinland, New Universe, and Radipole among the eleven acceptors.

The son of Redwood finished a brave second to the Tony McEvoy trained Vinland, beaten just 0.5 of a length at his most recent start, so met his rival 1.5kg better off at the weights.

Romancer was given another lovely ride in transit by apprentice Lachie King, and had the gelding poised to strike coming into the straight. Carrying just 52.5kg, Romancer produced his electric turn of foot, defeating the Logan McGill trained Gold Fields. Romancer has been in a purple patch of form since joining Grahame Begg’s stable, weighing in at each of his starts from his new barn, which includes a win at Flemington and a good second in the Listed Winter Championship behind Reykjavik.

The son of Redwood was a Listed winner in New Zealand as a three-year-old when trained by Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs and transferred to Australia just over 12 months ago where he initially joined the stable of Darren Weir before relocating to Grahame Begg more recently and seems to have recaptured the form.

Romancer has now won 7 of his 30 starts and more than $340,000 in stakes, while his dam Romantically has a stunning sister to the stakes winner heading to Karaka in January and is back in foal to Redwood.
