Skippers Canyon joins OTI ahead of Remutaka Classic

We’re delighted to confirm the acquisition of Skippers Canyon, a staying 3yo who could not have been more impressive last-start when running away a 5-length winner at Otaki last week.

Skippers Canyon has run some very encouraging races over shorter journeys, including against several of New Zealand’s most promising 3yo’s, and a test over a staying journey with the blinkers applied showed he has the makings of a very serious middle-distance horse.

His last start win was clearly impressive to the eye, and it was backed up on the clock. After starting his run at the 700m mark, Skippers Canyon, although widest on the turn, won by 5 lengths, running home his last 200m in 11.15s. Despite being over a staying journey, it was the fastest last 200m recorded on the day.

Skippers Canyon wins at Otaki (NZ) in January 2025.

A progressive 3yo like Skippers Canyon is spoilt for choice when it comes to rich staying targets over the next few months, and new connections won’t be waiting long to see him run in the OTI silks. The win at Otaki has qualified the gelding for the NZ$350,000 Remutaka Classic over 2100m at Trentham this Saturday. Although only one of two 3yo’s in the field, he is expected to be most competitive.

Fields are now out, with Skippers Canyon likely to jump from barrier 12 in the field of 14 with winning rider Kate Hercock on board again. To view the full field and details, click here.

Following Saturday’s run, a decision will be made on which Derby path looks most logical for the gelding. If a freshen up was in order, the Group 1 Queensland Derby ($1m) at the end of May could be an ideal target.

We’re excited to see Skippers Canyon step out this Saturday for trainer Jim Wallace and wish our new connections all the very best of luck.
