SA Group runners highlight OTI’s weekend

After some extreme weather conditions in Sydney last weekend, we look forward to a drier one in South Australia with two runners on Group level.

Warmonger will take his place in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes over 2000m with Damian Lane booked to ride. After an unlucky first-up run at Pakenham, the 3yo showed his true talent again last start, when finishing a strong 2nd in the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas.

Warmonger finishes 2nd in the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas.

“He is a strong, fit and sound gelding and I see him as a good chance in Saturday’s race. He’s had a couple of good gallops since his last run and is in great order. If he runs according to expectations, he will stay in Adelaide after the Group 3 and back up into the Group 1 South Australian Derby a week later.” commented co-trainer Mick Price.

Following on later in the day is 6-year-old mare Rivaport, who has shown this preparation she’s more than capable of being competitive in this class. She will run in the Group 2 Queen of the South Stakes over 1600m, jumping from barrier 6, with Michael Dee booked to ride.

“She is going beautifully at the moment. She has done everything I’ve asked of her and I’m very pleased with her.” said trainer Grahame Begg in an owner update.

The mare comes into the race in good form off the back of her 3rd placing in the Group 3 Epona Stakes at Rosehill. Dropping back in distance to 1600m isn’t ideal, but she’s enjoyed a freshen up between runs and this outing should set her up well for the Listed Centaurea Stakes a fortnight later over 2000m.
