It’s been a very memorable period for Perfumist’s connections, which culminated in a tilt at a $3.5m feature event despite a wobbly start to the campaign.
After showing great early promise, winning on debut as a 2yo, it was a surprise to all to see her get beaten at Bathurst, Wyong and Goulburn to start her 3yo season. Clearly still quite green and raw about things, a confidence boosting win at Mudgee, reeling off meeting-best sectionals, set her up for the rapid progression that would take place over her next 6 starts.
Dominant wins at Canterbury Park, Randwick and Rosehill followed, all up against older, more seasoned horses, which set her up to contest the $3.5m NZB Kiwi at Ellerslie. Heading to New Zealand 9th up at the end of a long campaign, the filly did a terrific job to finish 5th in
the Listed feature, leading the field up at a fast tempo. We have little doubt that should the race have come up a month earlier, Perfumist could well have been right in the finish.
Perfumist finished 5th in the $3.5m The Kiwi.
Having returned to Sydney in good shape, the filly has headed up to the Hunter Valley for a well-deserved 6-week spell. Still being quite a leggy and immature filly, she should continue to improve into her 4yo season.
Her spring plans will be centred around securing some well-deserved black type but having delivered her career best performance over 1500m at Rosehill, should the filly be successful in a stakes race, she could well deserve a crack at the $10m 1500m Golden Eagle for 4yo’s
in November.
Bjorn Baker and his team have done a wonderful job so far with Perfumist and we look forward to seeing that continue into her 4yo season.
