Last year’s road to the Big Dance was a highlight for connections of Cepheus, who finished 2nd in the $3m feature race on Melbourne Cup Day at Randwick, carrying top weight.
Now, connections of both Stuck With You and Eaglemont could take their first step towards the race in November by competing in the Ballina Cup this Friday, which holds Big Dance eligibility.
Eaglemont raced very consistently throughout 2023, having recorded three wins and multiple placings. His latest win came last start at Doomben on December 30, 2023, where he won by 1.5 lengths in a comfortable manner.
“Outstanding win by Eaglemont at Doomben, it was a very easy watch. He’s racing in really good order and is adapting well to everything we put in front of him. He’s come through the run well and is doing a great job, he’s on target for the Ballina Cup.” said Matt Dunn in an update to owners.
Eaglemont could run in the Benchmark 90 at Eagle Farm over 1600m the day after, should the meeting at Ballina not go ahead due to weather circumstances.
Also on the road for a Big or Little Dance spot is Stuck With You, who is also trained by Matt Dunn. Unlike his stablemate, Stuck With you comes into the race second up after a break over the spring season.
“He was very unlucky in his first up run at Eagle Farm, but he will bounce back for his next start. It certainly didn’t reflect how he is going at the moment. He has come through the run really well and the Ballina Cup looks like a really nice option for him.” said Dunn to the owners.
Stuck With You will be ridden by Matthew McGuren, while Eaglemont will partner up with Brodie Loy. See the full field and all race details here.
