OTI’s Weekend Chances

As we lead into March we have a quiet Saturday ahead. The beginning of the year has certainly flown by as we now turn to our autumn runners. Gallic Chieftain steps out this weekend for his first start this campaign in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes at Flemington, along with All-Star Mile wildcard nominee Tom Melbourne.

Having moved into the care of Archie Alexander in recent weeks, Gallic Chieftain is on route to win another edition of the Warrnambool Cup this preparation, giving this run a preparatory role in refining his race day fitness. In a strong field of 14 runners, he jumps from the handy barrier of number two with Jordan Childs on board. Archie is pleased with how the horse has progressed and is looking to make good use of his draw.

Tom Melbourne also joins the line up in the Blamey, having his third start this preparation since his short let up. Looking to impress for a wildcard slot leading into the All-Star mile, Tom will be ridden by Michael Walker in a way that will benefit his wide draw, maintain a relaxed rhythm and work home strongly. With a field full of All-Star Mile nominees, it’s Tom’s chance to shine and prove he’s worth a spot in the mile feature race on the 16th of March.

Rounding out the weekend is Entourage who is heading to Wangaratta for the 1590m on Saturday. Looking to break her maiden she has drawn to her advantage in barrier three with Liam Riordan on board for the Maher and Eustace team. Having also accepted to start on Sunday, Entourage may head to Colac for the mile maiden. She has again drawn favourably in barrier two, with John Allen taking the ride. A decision on her preferred track to run will be made overnight.
