OTI Racing Weekend Preview – Happy New Year!

A busy weekend to kick off 2021 for OTI with seven runners across two states.

Flemington on Friday

Dauntless headlines our runners at Headquarters where she’s set to debut in the 1000m 2yo Fillies Set Weights & Penalties event (Race 1 – 2:25 pm). The filly has done nothing but impress trainers Tony & Calvin McEvoy and after two strong trial performances, we expect her to be very competitive from barrier 10 with Jye McNeil aboard.

Doroza returns to the same track and trip that saw him run well when luckless three starts back. He looks well placed in the 2000m Benchmark 70 (Race 2 – 3:00 pm) with Lachie King’s claim and has continued to please trainer Matt Cumani.

After failing to run out a strong mile in her last outing, Hasstobegood drops back to 1400m in the Fillies & Mares Benchmark 70 (Race 6 – 5:40 pm). Although her form on paper leaves a bit to be desired, the mare has shown glimpses of the stakes ability that we know she possesses. With luck in running, we hope to see her bounce back to her best with Nash Rawiller in the saddle.

Caulfield on Saturday

Our sole representative at Caulfield, Southern Rock, steps out in trip to contest the 2400m Benchmark 70 (Race 3 – 2:05 pm). Trainer Archie Alexander hopes to see a change of tactics bring out the best in the 5yo New Approach gelding, who has struggled to find his form this preparation. Campbell Rawiller takes the ride and will look to be positive from the wide draw.

Eagle Farm on Saturday

OTI will have three representatives in the 2206m Magic Millions Shoot Out (Race 6 – 2:28 pm ADST), lead by 9yo warrior Grey Lion, who continues to thrive in training. Despite the big weight, it would not surprise to see Robbie Fradd and the Grey right in the finish.

Barade made the trip to Queensland earlier this week after enjoying a freshen up off the back of his two quality city performances. Jim Byrne rides and will have to overcome the widest gate, but Barade’s tenacity is sure to come into play. Trainer Archie Alexander couldn’t be happier with how the horse has travelled and expects a bold showing.

Despite being less favoured in the market, Milestone enters this race with serious claims off the back of his form this preparation. The Busuttin & Young team will apply blinkers and the rise in distance is sure to suit. Drawn barrier 4, Milestone and jockey Ron Stewart should get an economical run and be figuring in the finish.

Best of luck to connections and happy racing!
