OTI Racing is delighted to announce a formal retraining partnership with Lou Abey, one of Victoria’s leading thoroughbred retrainers, further strengthening our commitment to the welfare of our horses beyond their racing careers.
Having successfully worked with Lou to retrain and rehome retired racehorses in the past, this partnership marks an exciting next step in our ongoing relationship, providing a more consistent pathway for OTI horses transitioning from the racetrack into their next careers.
Lou has established an outstanding reputation in the thoroughbred aftercare space, having successfully retrained and rehomed more than 250 former racehorses. OTI will aim to place retired racehorses with Lou each year, while also providing financial support towards their care and retraining.
Lou will oversee the care, retraining and eventual rehoming of each horse, with individual programs tailored to each one. Once a horse is ready to move on, she will work to find an appropriate new home where it can continue to thrive in its next career.
An important aspect of the partnership is the opportunity for OTI to remain connected with our former racehorses through our Welfare Program. Through updates, photos and videos, we hope to follow the progress of our horses during retraining, and maintain contact with their new owners once they are rehomed.
We recently had the pleasure of catching up with Lou for an interview in last month’s edition of the OTI Gazette, where she shared some great insights into her work and the world of thoroughbred retraining, which you can read below.
