On Saturday night (AEST), Mr Satchmo had his first win in OTI colours when taking out the 1900m Listed Derby du Midi at Bordeaux, France.
A three-year-old colt by Mr Sidney, trainer Antione Watrigant was confident that Mr Satchmo would relish the heavy conditions on the day. Ridden by Eddie Hardouin, Mr Satchmo was sent straight to the front where he had a soft lead throughout the race. Before the turn, he was able to stride away from his opposition and not be challenged at any stage down the straight. It was dominating run by the horse aided by a superb steer from Hardouin.
Antione was delighted with the win but was also somewhat surprised, as he felt the field was very tough. The track conditions were in favour of Mr Satchmo, as he was able to handle the conditions better than his opposition.
Destined to remain in France for at least another season, it will surely not be his last victory for connections.
