Karaka performance suggests good things ahead for up and coming filly

Hasstobegood proved she belongs in top-flight company after holding her own against New Zealand’s premier filly, Probabeel, in the Karaka Million 3yo Classic at Ellerslie on Saturday.

In what was only her second start in OTI colours, her effort to finish third after being on the receiving end of some interference when balancing up for home, was incredibly brave.

Stepping away fairly from the barriers, jockey Vinnie Colgan settled Hasstobegood just better than midfield and secured a good run throughout the first 1000m. After working away from the inside approaching the turn and looming as a chance, Hasstobegood was hampered when eventual runner-up, Conqueror, came out underneath her and forced her off her line at a crucial stage. What was most pleasing was the way she stuck to the task over the final 300m, seeing the mile out strongly in the process.

After coming through the race well, Hasstobegood will enjoy a quiet few days in the James & Wellwood stable before a plan is mapped out for her short-term future. All will be done with the best interests of the filly at the forefront of mind after showing us that Group racing ambitions are well within her realm.
