Group 1 Missions for Athabascan & Interlinked

We look forward to watching Athabascan and Interlinked compete at the highest level on Saturday in their respective Group 1 missions.

After a terrific run in the Group 2 Avondale Guineas two weeks ago, Interlinked remained in New Zealand to take his place in the Group 1 New Zealand Derby this Saturday. He pulled up well from his run and has continued to do well in his training.

Interlinked finished 3rd in the G2 Avondale Guineas

“He has just been thriving during his time away and matured a lot. His gallop at Ellerslie last Saturday was very good, he did it effortless with his ears pricked the whole time. Sam Weatherly, who will also take the ride in the Derby, was very happy with him and said he’s rock hard fit and right on track for the race.”, said Trent Busuttin to connections.

Interlinked has drawn barrier 6 in a field of 17 and will carry 57kg. Click here for the full field and all race details.

We hope celebrations are in order Saturday evening, as many of his connections are making their way over to New Zealand for the weekend.

Back in Australia, we look forward to Athabascan, who will be aimed at the Group 1 Verry Elleegant Stakes over 1600m at Randwick. The gelding goes into the race first up after two positive trials, however the mile distance will almost certainly be too short of his best.

“He had a strong piece of work on the course proper on Tuesday and looked very sharp. He’s in great condition for his first up task and looks well. It will be a good kick off point for his preparation and he will step out in distance as we get further along. We just want him to get a good run and hit the line strong.”, commented Tom Charlton from the O’Shea stable.

Up against Group 1 winning mare Fangirl, it is a strong first up assignment, but Athabascan is in terrific order for another positive campaign. His main target for the preparation will be the Group 1 Sydney Cup in April.

Athabascan will be ridden by Tyler Schiller, carrying ? kg and jumping from barrier ?. View the full field and all race details here.

Best of luck to all connections involved in our horses over the weekend!
