Dual-G2 winner Cepheus ready to return on Saturday

Following a fruitful spring preparation, picking up the Group 2 Shannon Stakes and $1.5m Alan Brown Stakes, the tough and consistent Cepheus is ready to get his autumn campaign underway on Saturday in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup.

Never the flashest trialler, Cepheus has had two soft hit outs on unsuitable ground in preparation for his return after enjoying a few easy weeks at the beach over the Christmas period. Capable of sustaining a long preparation, Saturday’s race shapes as a platform for the campaign ahead, with targets like the Group 2 Ajax Stakes, Group 1 George Ryder Stakes and Group 1 Doncaster Handicap in his sights over the next couple of months.

Cepheus wins the Group 2 Shannon Stakes in the spring of 2023.

Good ground is the key, so connections will be hoping Sydney’s storms steer clear. Trainer Matt Dunn said “He’s had an extra couple of weeks of fitness work before returning, but he just did so well over the summer and has needed it. He’s forward enough now to run well and I’m really happy with the shape he’s in.”
