First G1 test for Toregene

Popular OTI mare Toregene has arrived in Sydney overnight in readiness for her first test at Group 1 level this Saturday at Rosehill.

After a very positive performance in her first up run at Sandown in the Group 3 Mannerism, where she finished second behind Espiona, the mare will now continue her prep up in New South Wales.

“She arrived up at Warwick Fun early on this morning, had a little look around, a swim in the pool and went straight to her breakfast. We’ll let her settle in for a day and get her ready for Saturday’s race, but so far I’m very happy with her” says trainer Matthew Williams after her arrival.

Toregene has accepted for the Group 1 Coolmore Classic, drawing barrier 4 in a field of 18. It will be her first attempt at racing Sydney way but multiple recent gallops in that direction should hold her in good stead.

The 4yo will carry 51kg in Saturday’s race and with a run under her belt, she should present well in the yard. Williams said earlier in the week “I’m very happy with her and I think we should have a crack at that Group 1 while we have the opportunity. She should get a nice run with Dean Yendall booked to ride.”

Looking back to her win in the Melbourne Cup Carnival Country Series Final, it was obvious to connections and race participants that Yendall and Toregene have a great bond. Returning after an injury, Dean Yendall was quite emotional winning a feature race at Flemington again, especially for trainer Matthew Williams who has been a huge support.

Hopefully the trio can add a competitive showing at Group 1 level to their CV together.

Best of luck to all connections!
