Competitive Sydney Cup for OTI

It is not often that we have three competitive horses in the running for the same Group 1, but Saturday’s Sydney Cup presents to be just that. Timour, Selino and Amade will all take their place in Saturday’s race for OTI and connections.

Previous Sydney Cup winner Selino returns to defend his title from 2021, where he won the Group 1 impressively by 1.3 lengths. Going into the race fourth up will see him at his peak fitness and he should present as a good chance for the race. Obviously returning from an injury, we are yet to see him back to his top form, but if he puts his best foot forward he should be competitive in the race.

Selino wins the Group 1 Sydney Cup in 2021.

Also returning from injury this year was Amade. The 8yo gelding, trained by Phillip Stokes, has again shown how competitive he still is, finishing third in the G2 Adelaide Cup this year. Following his good run, he is now headed to the Sydney Cup hopefully ready to show another pleasing performance. Like Selino, he will also start in the race fourth up with the advantage that he raced over 3200m last start.

Amade finishes 3rd in the Adelaide Cup in March, 2023.

Chris Waller trained Timour, who won the Group 3 Manion Cup last start, is the last of the three OTI horses to make the field for this year’s Sydney Cup. The 5yo has proven to be most competitive, but it will be an interesting race on Saturday seeing him step up to the famous Melbourne Cup distance for the first time, only having raced over further once in his career.

Timour joined Waller’s stable at the end of last year and has since had five race starts in Australia, seeming to have acclimatised very well to the life Down Under.

Timour wins the G3 Manion Cup in his last start at Rosehill.

Best of luck to connections of all three horses.
