Big Story heads to Group 3 on Derby Day

Big Story is set to step out at Flemington for the first time on Derby Day, but not in the feature race he was originally aimed for. Instead, he will head to the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes over 1600m.

Last seen in the Listed Hill Smith Stakes in Adelaide, trainer Mick Price and jockey Todd Pannell were both convinced he didn’t see out the 1800m journey. Price says “He loomed to win but he didn’t run the 1800m out, which suggests he can’t handle a Derby distance of 2500m. I think the G3 Carbine Club Stakes over a mile is a good alternative for him.”

After a short freshen up following his last start, the son of What’s The Story has handled his work at home very well and has been pleasing on the track. Co-trainer Michael Kent Jnr mentioned “He had a great few weeks since his last start, he moves well, looks great, possibly the best he’s been.”

Jockey Damian Lane has been booked to ride Big Story in the race and will carry 57kg, jumping from the outside barrier in a field of 13.

Best of luck to all involved!
