Another youngster off to the races

With the 2yo racing season in full swing, we look forward to seeing Nettles step out for the very first time. Trained by Annabel Neasham, the daughter of Overshare was acquired by OTI as a yearling in late April last year.

In preparation for her first career start, the filly had two official trials, in which both of them she delievered a pleasing performance. Her first race start will clearly tell us more about her and which possible future targets might suit, but Annabel has a positive opinion.

Nettles pleases in her second trial at Rosehill on February 13, 2023.

“She came through her trials really well and shows really good gate speed, which is really what you want for those 2yo races. I think she has done enough in her trials to go to the races and I wouldn’t be surprised if she runs well. She’s got enough speed and a really good attitude, she certainly deserves to head to the races.”

Nettles is currently accepted for tomorrow’s 2yo Maiden over 1000m at Warwick Farm, but also has two other possible options later this week.

Like Nettles, horses such as Lady Laguna, Indented Head and Elderberry have been very similar acquisitions for OTI. Initially bought out of the paddock from Spendthrift, they have proven to be quite competitive. Lady Laguna and Indented Head are both enjoying metro level success, while Elderberry only recently kicked off her career but has presented as a very strong filly. Lady Laguna, who is well-known for her early success as a 2yo winning her first two career starts, has been most competitive at black-type level during her career thus far.

OTI also holds a Maurice 2yo filly with Clayton Douglas, who has shown positive signs in her education up to this point. The filly will return to work in March for another educational preparation, which has the potential to culminate in a barrier trial and/or debut race start.

Best of luck to all connections of Nettles for her first career start this week!
