3 Sydney Cup runners highlight OTI’s weekend

The action from The Championships continues this weekend at Randwick with three runners in the time-honoured Group 1 Sydney Cup, Amade, Athabascan and Selino headlining the OTI onslaught on the staying affair. At Morphettville, Warmonger and classy filly Vivy Air will also contest in Group races for connections.

Exciting stayer Athabascan will step up to 3200m following an impressive showing in the Group 1 Tancred Stakes where he hit the line strongly. He is fourth-up into the race and galloped superbly on Tuesday Morning at Randwick. Tyler Schiller takes the ride at 50.5kg.

Out to complete the Geelong/Sydney Cup double, Amade heads into the race in terrific form following a most unlucky run in the Adelaide Cup. Having worn a blindfold in the barriers at his previous starts, trainer Phillip Stokes has removed it ahead of Saturday’s contest to keep him guessing. At 51.5kg, Michael Dee is booked to ride.

Rounding out the OTI contingency in the Sydney Cup is 8YO Gelding Selino, who will be ridden by Tommy Berry with 53kg for Chris Waller. Jumping from barrier 9, Waller stated that Selino would “love the jump in trip to the two miles” and hopes to see him repeat his victorious efforts from the 2021 race edition.

Over in South Australia, Warmonger steps out in the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas on a path to the South Australian Derby. Trainer Mick Price believes he has a strong chance, having worked nicely at Cranbourne during the week. With Thomas Stockdale in the saddle, we hope to see him right in the finish.

Rounding out our stakes runners for the weekend, Vivy Air takes her place in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes over 1800m. Following a strong showing in the Group 3 Alexandra Stakes at Moonee Valley, she is proven to have the quality to win a race of this nature with Zac Spain onboard.
