Tom Melbourne makes his million

The enigma that is Tom Melbourne has polarised the racing community since his last win in the 2016 Albury Cup.  On that day, the race caller surmised that he was ‘building a nice record – his 5th win from 7 starts’.  If only he knew what was to follow.

Since then, Tom Melbourne has recorded nine minor placings – three at Group 1 level – without a win.  His rating in that time has climbed from 96 to 104 via a career high of 106.

And now, after another gallant effort in Group 1 company in the Doncaster Handicap at Randwick on Saturday, Tom Melbourne has brought his career earnings to in excess of $1,000,000.  A magnificent achievement for any horse.

Tom Melbourne’s next chance to break his run of outs could be presented on April 21, again in Group 1 company, with Chris Waller considering a start in the 1400m All Aged Stakes.   The Brisbane carnival could follow for Tom Melbourne, who is currently only two runs into this campaign.
