Tigre Royale proves too strong for rivals in Sandown success

The win of Tigre Royale was celebrated by connections from all parts of the country yesterday.

Trainer Archie Alexander has been patient with the four-year-old son of Redwood, adamant his best will be seen at the distance of yesterday’s race. Victories of seven lengths when breaking his maiden, and the almost four lengths yesterday attest to that.

A bold run in defeat over the course last start, in what was his first run at 2400m for the campaign put the writing on the wall.

Tigre Royale settled towards the rear of the field, travelling kindly for jockey Damian Lane. Benefiting from the solid tempo that was applied throughout and having bidden his time long enough, Lane commenced his move into the race from the 800m.

Despite having to work around those tiring in front, he loomed ominously shortly after straightening before seizing control and putting the result beyond doubt at the furlong.

The performance suggested better wins are in store, with the lightly raced stayer to be given his opportunity to measure up as he works through his grades.
