Te Akau Shark’s Half-brother on the Way to Chris Waller

OTI is thrilled to have recently acquired a most promising yearling colt by Redwood, out of Bak da Chief.

The colt was originally bound for the Inglis Easter Sale, however due to current restrictions in place due to COVID-19, he remained in New Zealand. Over the next 3 weeks, our agent, Phill Cataldo, was able to reach an agreement for the horse’s purchase from his breeders.

This colt is the half brother to the multiple group 1 winner Te Akau Shark, a 5yo gelding who has taken all before him in recent times. After G1 success in New Zealand, he won the Chipping Norton (1600m) in March, his first G1 in Australia.

A 7-time winner from just 14 career starts, Te Akau Shark was given time to develop. We fully expect the colt to benefit from the same patient approach. He has the characteristics that lead us to believe that he will reach his best in his 3 and 4-year-old seasons.

A strong association with Redwood progeny is another link that favoured our purchase of the colt. Group winner Night’s Watch is among many of Redwood’s progeny that have served OTI well.

The colt will continue his early education in New Zealand. In spring, he will relocate to Chris Waller Racing operation in Sydney.
