San Huberto to take on the Jockey Club Derby in America

The Jockey Club Derby is making its debut in the 2019 season at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York as the final race in the Turf Trinity series.

The newly established Turf Trinity series, part of the 2019 Turf Triple Series, showcases the best 3-year-old turf runners on a 1 1/2 mile course.

Irish-bred San Huberto, a son of Speightstown, has shipped in from France for trainer Fabrice Chappet. A three-time winner from five starts, San Huberto owns a pair of listed stakes wins including the Coupe des Trois Ans at Lyon Parilly at 12-furlongs in May and the Prix Club Hipico Concepcion – Prix Michel Houyvet at 1 ¾-miles on August 4 at Deauville.

His recent form in France justifies him a place in the race, having received an invitation from NYRA after his two Listed wins this preparation. Kentucky Derby-winning rider Flavien Prat has the call from post 5.

The series, designed to emulate the American dirt classics, begins on July 6 at the Belmont Derby Invitational, followed by the Saratoga Derby on August 4. Then the Jockey Club Derby on September 7.

The US $1 million Invitational Jockey Club Derby is a Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In (within the turf division). The winner will earn an automatic berth to the Breeders’ Cup Turf in November to be held at Santa Anita in California.

“The Turf Trinity is designed to emulate the American dirt classics. The three-race $3,000,000 series complements the schedule with no overlap of the American Triple Crown races while also providing international runners with an opportunity to race against three-year-olds later into the summer,” said Martin Panza, NYRA’s Senior Vice President of Racing Operations.
