Romancer Continues Country Cup Campaign

This week’s racing holds quite an international flavour, with our horses racing far and wide around the globe.

Beginning in England in the Northern Hemisphere tomorrow morning, we have Achaeus stepping out for his second race start at Chelmsford, and most likely final race start for this year. The outing will be used as another learning curve for the young horse, who will be ready to come into his own next year.

Darren Weir has worked his magic on up and coming New Zealand import Romancer, securing the horse’s first victory on Australian soil in the Donald Cup. Romancer is looking to make it consecutive country cup victories in the Wodonga Cup on Friday afternoon. Jockey John Allen should give the horse every opportunity to continue on with his winning ways.

Saturday morning brings us to Chelkar lining up in a 1m4f handicap at Dundalk, Ireland. A quality horse on his day, he has struggled to find his best form in recent starts. Trainer Willie Mullins believes he has this horse on song for a good showing and will cap off his racing season in style.

Our attention heads back to Australia, where Scherzoso will line up in a Benchmark 90 handicap at Moonee Valley. Coming off a narrow defeat in the Dunkeld Cup, Scherzoso will be aiming to go one better at Moonee Valley; an effort that will be aided by the rise in distance to 2040m.

Elsewhere, Chris Waller has Given Time having his first race start this preparation. In what Waller describes as a quirky horse, Given Time has been given plenty of time to mature physically and mentally and we are looking forward to him stepping out at Rosehill.

Savvy Acquisition produced a career best performance last start at the Sunshine Coast to finish a close second for Tony Haydon racing in Queensland. He backs up this weekend again at Sunshine Coast this Sunday. The rise to 1800m should suit the son of Savabeel, who has been showing promise as a staying type.

Best of luck to each of their connections and happy racing!
