Promising pathways ahead for winning pair

The victory of French import Haky at Flemington on Saturday left Archie Alexander delighted.

Haky is a horse with a strong history for OTI. His former trainer is OTI’s current European Representative, John Hammond.

Hammond originally travelled the horse to Australia in 2019 with the aim of qualifying for the Melbourne Cup. After runs in the Herbert Power, Geelong Cup (when 3rd) and the Hotham on Derby Day Haky remained in the country and was transferred to Alexander’s Ballarat stable.

Following what was the 6-year-old’s first win on local soil, his new trainer will now plot a path through to the spring where he is sure to be competitive in a range of staying features.

One horse just beginning his career is Trench Warfare. The 3-year-old made his debut one to remember for connections with an impressive win over 1312m at Geelong on Sunday.

Aided by an excellent ride from Fred Kersley, the son of Pentire was allowed to find his stride throughout the early stages before unleashing a strong sustained run to the line, gaining ascendancy in the final few strides.

It was a significant moment for his jockey, with Kersley bringing up his first win as a senior rider for his leading supporter, Matt Cumani.
