Power filly Pankhurst to join Matthew Williams stable

OTI continues to bolster its portfolio of quality thoroughbreds with the addition of Pankhurst – a three-year-old Power filly, out of the Zabeel mare All By Myself.

The filly is aptly named after Emmeline Pankhurst, a British women’s rights activist who played an integral role in the U.K suffragette movement and helped women win the right to vote. She was the perfect inspiration for naming the filly, who OTI hope can embody the strength, resilience and success of her namesake.

Pankhurst is a New Zealand bred filly who was initially identified by renowned bloodstock agent Phill Cataldo after an impressive trial at Te Rapa. She showcased her smooth racing abilities when she found the finish line strongly and finished second in the trial.

“I really liked the way that she got her head down in the straight … travelled like a stayer” Cataldo commented on her action. “A real quality filly,” he added.

Pankhurst is beautifully bred and is on the same cross as one of Singapore’s top horses – Mr Clint, who is also by Power and out of a Zabeel mare. Most notably, Mr Clint won the Group 1 Singapore Guineas in 2018, and the Group 1 Singapore Gold Cup in 2019.

Pankhurst’s superb trial and high-calibre of pedigree impressed OTI and trainer Matt Williams, who purchased the filly in partnership.

“She’ll race this spring, and then we’ll look to target her towards quality middle distance and staying 3yo filly races in the autumn of 2021,” OTI’s CEO Terry Henderson said. “Her pedigree and superior action look to see her become a quality racehorse with potential broodmare value down the track,” he added.

The filly is ready to race and will travel to Australia in mid-September where she’ll begin her spring preparation at Matt Williams’ Warrnambool stable.
