In this edition of the Gazette, we sit down for an in-depth conversation with top New Zealand trainer Roger James, who is preparing OTI Cup contender Mark Twain.
We also explore the global yearling market boom, preview our runners for the weekend and introduce our new educational series, “Ask Anna”. Plus, we uncover the story behind the legendary Yellow Sam, and shine a spotlight on a promising 3yo stayer, Cap Saint Martin.

CHAT WITH ROGER JAMES
“By choice I never wanted to train a big team of horses, 40 was the cut-off for me because I like to be very hands on. I often think of something Jim Gibbs said to me – “It’s not how you train the best horse in the stable, it’s how you train the worst that matters.”

OVERSEAS YEARLING PRICE BOOM – WHAT’S GOING ON?
“The remarkable aspect of this surge at the top is how little it has filtered down to the middle and lower tiers of the yearling market. While quality “going” horses continue to sell well regardless of pedigree, yearling prices in the lower ranges have barely shifted in recent years. Ironically, given the inherent risks of racing (well-bred fillies aside), it is often the bottom end of the market that offers far better value for buyers.”
