OTI acquires Derby aspirant

Thunderstruck certainly stayed true to his name when he came home in lightning speed to win a trial at Te Aroha in New Zealand last month.

It was this impressive trial, where he came from near last to win dominantly, that caught the eye of OTI after a recommendation from New Zealand bloodstock agent Phill Cataldo. OTI purchased the gelding in partnership with the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr stable, who were just as keen to secure him.

“His trial immediately captured our attention. Whilst he was a little green, he displayed his natural ability and staying prowess,” Terry Henderson said of the striking three-year-old.

With the upcoming spring in their sights, both OTI and the Price and Kent stable were keen to relocate Thunderstruck to Australia as soon as possible.

“He’s ready to race as soon as he arrives in Australia later this month. With his powerful action, strong physique and calibre of breeding, he’s perfectly suited to a Victoria Derby campaign,” Terry added.

Thunderstruck’s breeding indicates that he’ll be a competitive stayer for his three-year-old year and in the future. He is by Shocking, a proven producer of quality stayers including Group 2 Adelaide Cup winner and early Melbourne Cup favourite Surprise Baby. On his dam’s side, he is the second foal of Primadonna Girl, who’s first foal Cantstopthefeeling, finished 2nd in the Group 2 Auckland Guineas last year.

With all roads leading towards the Victoria Derby, OTI is looking forward to Thunderstruck’s spring campaign.
