Midweek city double at Sandown with Selica and Petruchio

Two progressive horses laid their ability bare for all to witness when Selica and Petruchio both scored impressive victories for OTI, albeit in vastly different styles.

Three-year-old filly Selica launched an autumn campaign in the best possible fashion as she took out race two on the card for new trainer Phillip Stokes.

After jumping well, jockey Ben Thompson was able to secure a run just behind the speed, one off the fence. A moderate tempo was applied throughout the race with Selica travelling sweetly for Thompson. He kept her balanced after straightening and probed for a run once she eased around the heels of the leaders.

Perhaps what was most pleasing was the way in which she moved through her gears and attacked the line once fully extended over the final 100m. Whilst the margin was only narrow, connections have reason to be excited as to what the autumn holds with the best of Selica to be seen as she continues to step up in distance.

The judge had no need to call for the photo in the case of Petruchio, as he took out a 1600m BM70 in splendid isolation.

After beginning cleanly, Jordan Childs settled the son of New Approach towards the rear of the field, as has become his custom. The race was run to his liking, at a solid tempo from the moment the gates opened.

It was evident for all to see that Petruchio was in a smooth flowing rhythm and travelling kindly for Childs. From the 600m mark he was afforded clear galloping room and continued to blend in to the race.

It was all but over by the time they reached the 300m as Petruchio assumed control under a hold. In the space of a furlong he had surged three lengths clear of the pack chasing in vein and was eased down over the concluding stages.

We are looking forward to seeing both horses work through their grades as they continue into their preparations.
