Mark Twain eyes off Auckland Cup following Te Rapa victory

Mark Twain successfully pierced his way through the field at Te Rapa (NZ) on Saturday in the 2100m Benchmark 75 Handicap and is one step closer to taking his place in the Auckland Cup in a few weeks.

Mark Twain wins at Te Rapa (NZ) by 0.8 length

“The race didn’t go as we planned and there was a gap on the inside, so Masa looked to give Mark Twain his best chance and he just sprinted really well and managed to get the win. It was a good ride and we’re very happy with the horse. He pulled up sound and is feeling well and we will have a discussion on exact plans heading forward.”, said trainer Robert Wellwood.

Mark Twain could be seen again this Saturday in the Avondale Cup should it be felt that a further run is required, however exact plans are yet to be confirmed. He could well take the four weeks between runs and head straight to the Auckland Cup on March 9, 2024.

Congratulations again to all involved with Mark Twain!
