Looking for Gold at The Valley

We look forward to an all important Friday night meeting at The Valley this week, prior to the running of the Cox Plate the following day.

We may not have a runner in this year’s Cox Plate, but are represented in the feature race on Friday night with Athabascan taking his place in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup over 2500m.

Athabascan has proven before that he has the stamina and talent to be a most competitive stayer, winning the Listed Lexus CTC Cup as well as the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality this preparation. Now five starts into his campaign, he has plenty of fitness behind him to continue on a competitive path and has thrived during his time at Flemington. Trainer John O’Shea has made sure to space out his early runs to allow plenty of time for recovery, keeping the gelding fresh and on his toes for an important spring campaign.

Athabascan wins the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality at Rosehill in September, 2023.

In preparation for his race on Friday, Athabascan had a gallop at The Valley on Tuesday morning with Damian Lane, who will also take the ride on him in the Gold Cup.

“He went great, cruised along in front, changes lead legs well and got into a nice rhythm. He seems like he’s held his good form and finished off his work nicely.” said Lane after the gallop.

“His work at Flemington, where he is staying at the moment, has been fantastic. He’s feeling the best he ever has, he’s very fresh and looks great.” added Tom Charlton from the O’Shea stable.

Athabascan has drawn barrier 1 in a field of 15 horses. See all race details and the full field here.

The 5yo gelding is yet to secure a possible start in the Melbourne Cup this year. A win on Friday night, which could lead to a weight penalty, could be his chance to secure that spot.

Best of luck to all involved!
