Last start winners take on Geelong

A pair of exciting last start winners will compete this Saturday at Geelong, continuing their summer campaigns.

Talented mare Fretta, who won on debut at Sandown over twelve months ago, made a winning return to the races in December 2023 at Bendigo.

After a long spell between runs, due to the removal of a bone chip, the daughter of Frankel returned in terrific order and looks to have a promising career ahead of her.

Trainer Mick Price commented after her win “She pulled up well. She is in very good order, sound and a beautiful mare. She had another grass gallop and was strong to the line. We have Jye McNeil booked to ride and hopefully she can keep winning. It is a tougher race, but there is no reason why she couldn’t win it.”

Fretta goes into Saturday’s race second up with three weeks between runs, stepping up to 1700m for the first time. See the full field and all race details here.

Also heading to Geelong after a most convincing performance last start is Speranzoso, who won by eight lengths at Cranbourne just before Christmas.

“It was terrific to get another win next to his name and a very easy watch. He pulled up well and I gave him a pretty easy week after, but he’s had another gallop at Mornington and worked super. He’s obviously been in work for a while so we will space his runs a bit and keep him happy and hopefully have a nice autumn campaign with him. I can’t fault him and think he has a really good chance again on Saturday.” said Clayton Douglas to owners.

Jordan Childs, who rode the gelding in both wins this preparation, is back in the saddle on Saturday in the BM70 over 2400m. See all race details and the full field of runners here.

Improving stayer Mercian Hymn is also engaged in the same race, but having drawn the widest alley, we’re likely to see him head to Sandown next Wednesday instead.

Best of luck to connections of both runners!
