Kazaru Chases 2yo Black-Type on Saturday

A year after Femminile’s extraordinary victory in the Listed Oaklands Plate at Morphettville, flashing from last down the outside fence, Phillip Stokes will attempt to go back-to-back in the same race and the same colours when the lightly-raced Kazaru takes her place on Saturday. Femminile wins the Listed Oaklands Plate in 2024.

Kazaru, a half-sister to OTI’s Group 2 winner Daqiansweet Junior, has surpassed all expectations in her 2yo season just in reaching this race. As a staying-bred filly, her three and four-year-old season will undoubtedly find superior performance, however the lure of black-type as a two-year-old looms large and would provide a significant boost to her value.

While Kazaru finished in the second half of the field on debut at Geelong earlier in June, Stokes was keen to proceed to Saturday’s race. As he proved with Femminile last year, Phillip understands what it takes to win a race like this and it is worth noting that Femminile had a very similar race performance on debut prior to taking her place in the field in the Oaklands Plate.

Win, lose or draw on Saturday, Kazaru will head to the paddock on Monday, with a view to her three-year-old season paramount. On the progression she has made in her two-year-old season, she has great promise.
