At the recent New Zealand Breeze-Up Sales, OTI and Archie Alexander joined forces to buy this impressive 2yo son of Redwood. This gelding was a ‘must buy’ recommendation from our New Zealand agent, Phill Cataldo. Phill had watched the gelding develop from a yearling into a youngster with the qualities of a promising racehorse.

The Redwood, out of She’s Sweet (by Danzero), is a 15.3h, medium-sized 2yo. As the attached videos show, he’s a well-balanced, athletic individual who walks using his frame efficiently. At the gallop, like most Redwoods, he carries his head a little high, however, this does not impede his balance or stride.

Some key features that encouraged the purchase are:

• Most importantly, this youngster has speed. Under little pressure, he galloped his 200m in the breeze up in 10.77s.
• The gelding’s conformation is excellent. He possesses short pasterns, good feet, an athletic rather than muscular body, and a docile temperament. He looks ideally suited to middle distance events.
• The family of the gelding has much to recommend. His dam, She’s Sweet has produced multiple Group 3 winner McClintock, as well as six other foals, all of which have won. She’s Sweet is also a half-sister to multiple stakes horses including Little Pattie.
• Redwood is now a proven sire, with OTI being a prominent owner of many of his progeny, including Night’s Watch, Romancer, Tigre Royale and Yosemite. OTI also own the unraced 2yo Redwood colt who is the half-brother to dual Group 1 winner Te Akau Shark.
• This gelding will be trained by Archie Alexander at his Ballarat stables. Archie is one of Victoria’s most promising trainers, now sitting inside the state’s top ten winning trainers. • Given the physical development and pedigree of this gelding, we expect him to have his first race start in the autumn. He’ll be assessed for a 2021 spring campaign, however generally being late developers, we are more likely to see the best of this Redwood in the autumn of his 3yo year.

With all costs, including insurance, paid to the end of his 2yo season (July 31, 2021), a 5% interest will cost $5,800 plus GST.

This youngster is excellent value as a promising racehorse. He possesses all the attributes to make him a quality horse for many years to come.
