G1 Placing for Gallic Chieftain

Gallic Chieftain showed his class in the Group 1 Metropolitan at Randwick on Saturday, flying home to finish second by less than a head to Waller trained Come Play With Me.

From the awful gate, Tommy Berry rode him very well. Managing to push up and slot in without covering too much extra ground, Tommy peeled off at the right time to chase the leaders, closing the final 600m in some incredible sectionals.

Trainer Archie Alexander was thrilled with the outcome, stating that it was an “amazing run by The Chief, he always tries his best and thought it was one of the best rides you’d see in defeat”.

Alexander will see how Gallic Chieftain pulls up before deciding where to head too next, options include the G1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield or the St Leger Stakes (2600m) at Randwick. We look forward to seeing him go one better next start!

Romancer also continued his purple patch of form, with a sensational second place in the Listed Paris Lane Stakes at Flemington on Saturday. (To view the race results and replay, please CLICK HERE).

Having jumped well for Lochie King, he went to the lead, however was pressured in running by the horse settling on his outside. Upon straightening he let down brilliantly, but was just caught on the line to be pipped by half a length.

Nearing the end of his campaign, Grahame Begg will look to find one more race for Romancer in the coming weeks.
