French Expats Dominate for OTI

In what was a successful weekend for OTI, we were thrilled to see two French imports in the winner’s circle for the first time in Australia.

On Saturday, the Busuttin & Young-trained Karburan delivered a well-deserved victory at Cranbourne, aided by a clever ride from Daniel Moor. A five-year-old son of the Aga Khan’s prominent stallion Zarak, Karburan was acquired from France in 2023. Having shown glimpses of talent since arriving in Australia, it was great to see him finally put it all together on his home circuit. Jockey Daniel Moor was able to capitalise on a track that was favouring leaders early in the card, taking up the running and dictating at a controlled tempo. The horse always travelled well into the run home, giving a good kick into the straight and winning softly on the line. It was a terrific result for his patient ownership group, and hopefully he can continue on his winning ways following a confidence-boosting win.

Typical of many European imports, Everything Counts has taken time to adjust to the Australian racing style. The Zoustar gelding has always displayed plenty of potential, but has often let himself down by racing too fiercely. Thankfully on Sunday, Zac Spain was able to get him in a lovely rhythm throughout, allowing the horse to execute his race effectively. While his French form on rain affected ground was only fair, the 5yo appeared to relish the heavy conditions at Kilmore, stretching out nicely to claim the win. Running into second position was OTI stablemate Andy Win, who put in a very encouraging effort on his Australian debut and will be better suited as he gets out in trip.

Adding to the success at Kilmore was Kiwiesque, a promising half-sister to Hezashocka. It was a most impressive victory, particularly given the amount of physical development still to come with the filly. She will now be given a well-earned break before possibly heading towards the 2025 Australasian and/or Queensland Oaks.
