Etna Secures his First Win in Australia Over the Weekend

The heavy 9 and wet conditions did nothing to dampen Etna’s efforts on Sunday, going on to take out his first win in Australia by three lengths, easing down at the line. The rise in trip suited perfectly and he relished the wet conditions.

A horse that has overcome injury since his arrival down-under, Etna is finally putting things together. Rewarding his owners for their patience with a convincing win, he will now continue to progress through the grades for Aaron Purcell.

Over the weekend we also saw a sound performance from Shocking filly Au Pair who ran second at Echuca in the 1600m maiden. Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young believe this filly is of Oaks quality, so she will now head to the Oaks Trial over 1800m at Flemington September 25. Looking for further, jockey Harry Coffey felt she let down beautifully and is on track to winning a race.

Romancer rounded out the placings this weekend with a solid third place in the Listed Sofitel at Flemington on Saturday. A touch keen in running due to the slow pace, he was checked for a run in the straight and battled on well to finish 1.5 lengths off the winner. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering from colic and he has since recovered well after being monitored around the clock over the weekend.

Gailo Chop also had a nice hit out at Flemington, with the lack of race fitness taking its toll in the concluding stages. Running some fast sectionals early, he simply ran out of gas. Gailo’s fitness will improve immensely from the run and all things going well, he heads to the Underwood Stakes September 29.

Night’s Watch ran a brave race, clocking some swift sectionals that matched the fast-finishing Mr Quickie. The wide barrier made the run difficult, with Damien Oliver electing to conserve the horse’s energy by getting back and taking a sit. Night’s Watch ran home well and we are looking forward to the rest of his campaign over spring.
