Caulfield Cup shot for Inverloch after Mornington Cup Prelude win

Imported galloper Inverloch will attempt to sneak into the Caulfield Cup field by running on Saturday after his win in the Listed Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m).

The winner of the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) earns a ballot exemption for October’s Caulfield Cup.

Trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young will back up Inverloch in the $350,000 race after his Prelude win. Jockey Mick Dee quickly summed up the situation before sending Inverloch to his favoured front-running position from where he was never headed.

Inverloch pinched a break when he quickened on the home turn before holding on to beat favourite Secret Blaze by 1 ½ lengths while Odeon had every chance before finishing third.

“He had a beautiful lead, he had his ears pricked and quickened up really well,” Dee said. “He picked up underneath me, I didn’t have to ask him, he just grabbed the bridle again and put a couple of lengths on them quite comfortably. “It was a very good win.”

Inverloch’s win had a nice touch to it as the winner was strapped by Mitch Goring, the son of the late jockey Mark Goring.
