Atypical ready for debut after Cranbourne trial win

Atypical will be out to reinforce his trainers long-held view as he nears a race debut on the back of an impressive four and a half-length trial victory at Cranbourne on March 3.

Clinton McDonald has displayed patience with the four-year-old son of Pierro after identifying him as a future stayer of promise.

“We’ve taken the time to give him a stayers preparation from the start after first identifying him as a yearling. Now we’re starting to tighten the screws and see a really nice horse.”

The effort at Cranbourne last week, when he won going away from the field, left him delighted. “I was very impressed with his trial. When Teo Nugent asked him to extend, he did easily, which is exactly what we want to see.”

Atypical’s pedigree is packed with proven staying credentials. His dam, Indifferent, is a three-quarter sister to multiple Group 1 winning star, Zipping.

Pierro’s efforts at stud speak for themselves. He has produced G1 horses each season, including Furore, who took out the 2019 Hong Kong Derby (2000m) to stamp Pierro’s ability to produce progeny capable of performing across a range of distances at the top level.

A race over 1400m at Sandown on March 18 appears the most likely starting point.
