Attorney ends campaign on a high note with Pakenham Cup triumph

Attorney ended his spring campaign on a high note on Saturday after taking out the Listed Pakenham Cup over 2500m for Matthew Smith.

The French-bred gelding settled midfield in the run, before producing a barnstorming finish down the centre of the track under the superb guidance of Nash Rawiller. Attorney, who was favourite for the race, beat home Creedence by half a length, with Knights Order taking 3rd place.

Matt Smith told Racenet that he was delighted with Attorney’s win, commenting that he may aim for the Sydney Cup next autumn.

“It’s great to finish off the carnival like this.”

“He’s always looked like he’s a 2400-plus horse, I can’t see any reason why we wouldn’t look at races like the Sydney Cup,” Smith said.

The win concludes a successful campaign for Attorney, who also won the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality at Rosehill in September.

OTI’s CEO Terry Henderson commented that the win was a fantastic reward for our owners.

“It capped off a really satisfying campaign, having won the G3 in Sydney three runs back. Our ownership group has been patient with this horse, as has Matt.”

“He’ll have a quiet few weeks, get a good rest and then he’ll come back for autumn next year.”

“I think we’ve really got a good horse on our hands and we can look forward to 2021 with him.”

It was an extra special win for many of his owners who were able to celebrate on course at Pakenham Race Club following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.

Congratulations to Attorney’s connections, Matt Smith and Nash Rawiller!
