Quality galloper Wymark returned to the winner’s circle in style on Sunday, capturing the feature Yarra Valley Cup with a polished performance in what is becoming a remarkable rejuvenation under Gavin Bedggood’s care.
Ridden confidently by Beau Mertens, the talented gelding produced a well-timed run to claim the Cup and underline his staying credentials. The victory reversed the results of the recent Wangaratta Cup, with the winner of that race, New York Hurricane, amongst the placings on this occasion.
Settled in a comfortable position throughout, Wymark travelled strongly before quickening when asked around the final turn. Challenged and headed by New York Hurricane, Wymark kicked again to prevail.
Connections are now setting their sights on a richer autumn target, with plans for Wymark to step out next in the Group 3 Easter Cup at Caulfield on April 4. The 2000-metre contest shapes as a natural progression following his Yarra Valley triumph and increase in handicap rating.
Wymark heads toward the Easter Cup with renewed purpose. With the same blend of tactical speed and toughness displayed on Sunday, why not target such a race?
