Mark Twain – The Next Chapter

Mark Twain will return to the big stage this weekend when he lines up in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes at Flemington, marking an important milestone in the next phase of his career.

Now under the care of leading trainer Phillip Stokes, the talented galloper enters the 1600m feature with renewed purpose. Stokes is optimistic about restoring the horse’s confidence and competitiveness at the elite level.

Previously trained in New Zealand by Roger James and Robert Wellwood, Mark Twain was regarded as a horse of genuine stakes quality before his progress was halted by a tendon injury sustained in 2024. Following an extensive and carefully managed 12-month rehabilitation, he returned to racing in the spring of 2025. His performance in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes behind Mr Brightside, Aeliana and Via Sistina was considered encouraging; however, his form tapered off thereafter, culminating in a below-par effort in the Bendigo Cup.

Connections subsequently elected to reset his campaign, keeping him in Australia and transferring him to Stokes’ training base at Pakenham. Renowned for his ability to rejuvenate horses and extend careers, Stokes has adopted a patient and methodical approach, with a strong focus on both the horse’s physical wellbeing and mental freshness.

Mark Twain finishes 3rd in recent Pakenham trial.

Stokes remains measured but quietly optimistic about the task ahead.

“This is a starting point,” Stokes said. “We’re looking forward to seeing him back at the races. If he can finish off strongly and show his old enthusiasm, that gives us something to build on through the autumn. His two trials have been promising and he’s shown a willingness, but race day will tell us more.”

Mark Twain has drawn barrier eight in the field of ten for Saturday’s assignment and will be ridden by Lachie Neindorf, as he begins what connections hope will be a successful new chapter.
