Straight to the races

The Seven Falls is an exciting young stayer who is now ready to commence his Australian career under the care of Bjorn Baker in Sydney.

In his short career in New Zealand, the late maturing gelding showed attributes that encouraged us to closely watch his progress. When the opportunity came to acquire him, we acted quickly. Since arriving in Sydney, Bjorn Baker has been delighted with the gelding.

On the back of 2 good trials, The Seven Falls has raced three times in New South Wales without missing a place. He’ll now be aimed at races over further ground, with his next proposed race pencilled in for the 29th of November at Wyong over 2100m.

Bjorn Baker says “Lovely, big stayer.  I really like him.  Very, very nice horse.  Doing everything well.  He’ll stay all day”.

The Seven Falls is a tall rangy type standing 16.2 hands. He walks fluently and possesses a long galloping stride. His conformation and feet are excellent. Importantly for a stayer, his has a docile temperament.

At the suggestion of our NZ agent Phil Cataldo, Terry Henderson inspected The Seven Falls in January this year. At that stage, he had run a fast finishing 3rd at Avondale, one of Auckland’s premium tracks. At the time and although liking him as a type, Terry felt the horse needed to mature further.

Subsequently, The Seven Falls finished a close second at his next start, again at Avondale. Despite the temptation to progress to the NZ Derby, the owners wisely decided to hold back. He was then given another start in April, when again he finished strongly for a 3rd placing.

On the back on his NZ form, another attempt was made to buy the gelding. A price was agreed and OTI took ownership in mid-April. Under the control of his New Zealand trainer, the gelding was brought to Melbourne for one race at Geelong where he finished a moderate 7th. After the race, he was diagnosed with a mild virus and immediately spelled.

The gelding was then placed in the care of Bjorn Baker. Since returning from his spell, Seven Falls has delighted Bjorn in all respects. He had a soft trial on September 7th where he finished 3rd of 10. In his second trial on September 24, he led and won finishing his last 600m in 35.5. It was a most impressive effort and convinced Bjorn of this readiness to go to be competitive at the races.

In his first official race start for Bjorn Baker, he was sent out as a $3 favourite. In what proved to be a slightly unlucky run, the horse was able to finish off strongly, only beaten a length while carrying the top weight.

In summary, The Seven Falls has had the ideal grounding to now become a quality stayer.

The bloodlines of The Seven Falls are exceptional. His sire, Niagara was a quality galloper who in turn was sired by the champion, Encosta de Lago. Arizona, The Seven Falls dam, was lightly raced. She is by another champion stallion High Chaparral and out of Chelse, a Zabeel mare. The Seven Falls is her first foal.

The parentage of this horse is most impressive and confirms his staying characteristics. High Chaparral, Zabeel and Encosta de Lago are also renowned as being stallions whose progeny improve with age.

The Seven Falls represents great value for owners wishing to be involved in a most promising stayer. Still a maiden, owners gain the opportunity for excellent stakes earnings as the gelding progresses though his classes to open handicaps.
