For horses with an eye on winning a Derby as a 3yo, OTI has had a long and successful association with NZ-breds at this time of year. Kibbutz and Brambles are two that enjoyed the ultimate success in recent years. On what we have seen to date, Savvy Acquisition could well be added to the list.

Savvy Acquisition has all the characteristics one wants in a horse aimed at a Derby – beautifully bred by a stayer who wins Derbies, proven Derby winning trainer, conformation, temperament and most important of all, ability.

With Savvy Acquisition ready to race within the next few weeks, partners will quickly get the chance to appreciate this gelding’s talent.

The gelding will be trained at Cranbourne by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young.  Trent and Natalie are producing exceptional results with young horses, whilst also proving to have ability to train on.  The partnership is achieving an amazing win strike rate of 20% plus.

“I’m thrilled to have this horse arrive into my care.  I was very keen on him as a yearling, but was unable to secure him at that time.  On the back of what I’ve seen in the flesh and at the trials, I am very much looking forward to getting him to the races for his new owners”

At 15.3 hands high, Savvy Acquisition is a strong, masculine but athletic individual.  He is strong through the shoulder and possesses a deep girth.  At the walk, he is well balanced, and he gallops with a fluent action. His temperament is excellent. Quite simply, a very well put together racehorse.

Savvy Acquisition has had one official trial. It was over 1000m at Foxton in NZ on March 14.  Settling 4th of 6, he moved into the straight nicely around the turn.  Although green, he showed an excellent turn of foot to finished powerfully over the concluding stages.  He and the winner cleared out from the other trial competitors.  To confirm his ability, the time of this 2yo trial (the only 2yo over 1000m on the day) was the second fastest of the 7 trails on the day. His sectionals over the last 400 were excellent.

On the back of that trial in New Zealand prior to departure, he should be at the races within four weeks. Before being acquired, the previous owners, who were also the horse’s breeders, were planning to start the 2yo at a feature race meeting at Ellerslie NZ on April 15.  He arrives in Australia ready to go to the races

The gelding is likely to have a run or two for experience in autumn before a short spell to prepare for a spring preparation.  His eyes will be firmly set on the VRC Derby.
