~ WELL-BRED 2YO COLT THAT IMPRESSED AT TRIAL – JOHNNY MURTAGH TO TRAIN ~

In a similar manner to the trials in Australia and New Zealand, Dundalk in Ireland now conducts regular jump outs. Like trainers here, Irish trainers are finding them to be a valuable tool to assess a horse’s ability.

Given our success in buying from such trials in New Zealand, we commissioned a couple of agents to keep an eye out for suitable targets. Although we have been referred quite a few, Ottoman Emperor, whose details are provided below, is the first to be acquired.

Ottoman Emperor was trained by Cormac Farrell, a trainer based at the Curragh. In his trial, the colt showed good ability to finish second (behind one of Joseph O’Brien’s) in the second fastest of the six trials on the day. The third horse in the trial, Belmont Avenue (also trained by O’Brien) has subsequently raced and finished second, beaten a head.

Subject to completing our due diligence process, we finally secured the colt. This process included Johnny Murtagh inspecting the horse. He gave him an excellent recommendation, saying that, as an unfurnished scopey individual, there was plenty of improvement to come through natural maturity. Johnny also spoke to the jockey who rode the horse in the trial. Again, the assessment was most positive – “you should definitely buy him”.

Ottoman Emperor is a chestnut colt standing around 16.1 hands high. He is a rangy type with a long striding action. He is sound limbed with good feet. He appears a very athletic individual.

To allow him to fill his frame, Johnny Murtagh will put little pressure on Ottoman Emperor for the next few months. His program will be developed to have him ready to race in May in the hope that he will progress to the better classes of 3yo races during the season. From what has been seen to date, and given the improvement expected, the colt should be effective at distances between 1400m and 2000m

At the end of his three-year-old season, an assessment will be made as to whether he comes to Australia, continues to race in Ireland or be sold. To continue in Europe, he would have to show credentials that enabled him to compete at the top level. With the demand for this type of colt remaining high in Hong Kong, consideration would also be given to a sale should partners wish to do so, if those circumstances arise.

As a son of Excelebration, by Exceed and Excel, out of Tertullian’s daughter Ibiza’s Empress, Ottoman Emperor is the product of a A++ mating. Danehill’s sons and grandsons have consistent, superior results when mated with daughters of Tertullian.

Excelebration needs little introduction, having sired over 230 winners, including G1 champion sprinter Barney Roy and numerous other stakes winners.

Ibiza’s Empress is from a top-level German family that consistently produces stakes horses. A winner at 1600m herself, this colt is her first foal. She is also the half-sister of the consistent stakes-performer in the UK and France, Pleasant Sunrise.

The female line of the family also includes Ibicenco, who won over $600,000 for OTI owners including the Geelong and Sandown Cups. He was also second in the G1 Cologne Preis van Europa.
