Meltdown

  • Sire Showcasing
  • Dam Tantrum
  • Age 7yo mare
  • Career 19: 2-5-2
  • Prize Money $85,675

Our New Zealand agent Phill Cataldo was insistent that we acquired Meltdown. Having purchased Aloisia, So Far Sokool, Hasstobegood and Selica, all of which went on to be stakes fillies, he was confident that this beautifully-bred 2yo filly would do the same.

Meltdown will arrive at Phillip Stokes’ training property in Pakenham on the next flight out from New Zealand. Current predictions are that her flight should be on June 8. Having had a 6-week spell since her trial win at Avondale, she will commence her preparation on arrival to Australia with the feature spring races in mind. On breeding, conformation and her talent, she looks to be most suitable at distances around 1600m.

The key features that attract OTI to Meltdown are:

  • Although under some pressure at the 400m point of her 2yo 800m trial, she showed excellent stamina to run to the line strongly and win the trial. It was one of the faster trials of the day. The video below prepared by Phill Cataldo shows both the filly’s trial and parade footage.
  • Being by Showcasing (whose yearlings sold for up to $NZ500,000 at the Karaka sale this year) and from the Savabeel mare Tantrum, this filly has the bloodlines to make both a top racehorse and a valuable broodmare when she finishes racing.
  • At 16hands, the filly is very attractive, being almost black in colour. She’s a scopey, athletic type with a relaxed walk to match her laidback temperament.
  • As an orphan foal, she was given plenty of time to develop naturally. Hence she will start her career in Australia without having been pressured to go early.
  • The filly was vetted in New Zealand and results confirmed by Ballarat Vet Practice. Both sets of vets described her low risk. Importantly, she had a grade 1 scope.

Phillip Stokes at Pakenham is delighted to be training this spring prospect. Phillip, regarded as one of the most professional trainers in Victoria (and South Australia, where he also has stables), will give the filly every chance to develop her talent.

With all costs (including insurance) paid until July 31, 2020, a 10% interest will cost $17,150 plus GST or a 5% interest at $8,575 plus GST.

Future owners of this filly can have confidence that the due diligence processes applied when purchasing her will result in success as she commences her racing career in Australia.
