Raw ability tends to stand out in young horses. It certainly has with Glens Top Cat, a highly talented gelding acquired in the UK. Beautifully bred, this 16.1 hands chestnut with an unusual name, has proven form that should see him develop into a top-class stayer in Australia.

With Matt Cumani as trainer and co-purchaser with OTI, the gelding arrived in Australia in March of 2022 in the hope he would quickly work his way through the classes.

Glens Top Cat had one race start in the UK (closing stages shown below). Over 1400m at Newcastle (UK) in December, he finished a short head second to a $1.70 favourite trained by John Gosden. The third horse, some 3.75 lengths behind, subsequently won his next race.

Glens Top Cat is by the son of Galileo, Gleneagles, one of Coolmore’s top stallions. Gleneagles won the 2000 Guineas before going on to become a Group One producing stallion.

The gelding’s mother, Kittens (by Marju) won three races between 2400m and 3200m in the UK. She is the half-sister to two stakes winners Purr Along and Katawi, who both won over shorter distances. The family is proven in Australia, with close relation Bartholomeu Dias progressing well over staying journeys for Annabel Neasham.

On the 15th of June (2022), he had his first trial of the preparation at Burrumbeet, with a video report and replay provided below.

In summary, Glens Top Cat is a most exciting gelding. With the foundation work done in Europe, he is now poised to have a long and successful career in Australia.
