~ 2yo colt by leading European stallion, Kingman & trained by Joseph O’Brien ~
“Rollet has done everything nicely so far with us. He is a grand, straightforward colt with a good attitude. We expect him to be at his best going 1400m-1600m in his three-year-old season and beyond.”
~ Joseph O’Brien
Like his half-brother Mantastic, Terry Henderson bred Rollet with his French breeding partners. Sent to the Deauville Yearling sale in 2019, the colt was passed in. This came as a great surprise to the partnership, as the colt was rated well by vets, prominent trainers and the stud who bred him.
Terry was aware that Joseph O’Brien had inspected Rollet and liked him. Terry then negotiated with his partners to buy the colt for OTI, on the basis he would be trained by Joseph. Suffice to say Joseph was delighted, having given Rollet a glowing endorsement.
Key details on this colt:
- A son of leading European stallion Kingman. Kingman stood for £150,000 ($A285,000) in 2020, having already produced Group 1 winner Persian King and the undefeated Group 2 winner Calyx (now standing at stud). As a stallion he has broken all records, including Galileo and Frankel, in his first 2 years at stud.
- Out of Foreign Legionary, a daughter of Galileo and a half-sister to Irish Champion Alexander Goldrun. Alexander Goldrun was a five-time Group 1 winner. As mentioned, Rollet, a 2yo, is a half-brother to Mantastic. The bloodlines crossing Kingman (a son of Invincible Spirit) with Galileo gives an A+ rating.
- Rollet has impressed Joseph O’Brien during his 2yo year. Not wanting to rush his progression, Joseph consistently comments on how pleased he is with the colt.
- Strong-bodied and well-conformed with an athletic walk, O’Brien has brought the colt along slowly with the view of possibly giving him one run as a 2yo before concentrating on his 3yo season.
- Joseph O’Brien and OTI have a great relationship, highlighted by Downdraft, who won the Lexus Stakes in 2019. Joseph has quickly become one of the world’s leading trainers after winning his second Melbourne Cup this year.
- The colt’s older 3yo half-sister by Lope de Vega, now a winner, sold in 2017 for $610,000. Another half-brother, again by Lope de Vega sold for $680,000 in 2020.
- The colt is expected to come to Australia at the end of his 3yo year in Europe.
