Bred in the Purple and She Can Run
Urban Royal was purchased by Matt Cumani early in 2016. She seemed a classic type in every way, so exercised the option to buy 50% of her in December. A filly of this breeding and quality already possesses good residual value. This value can only improve with race performance, making her a most attractive commercial proposition
Currently the filly is in her second full preparation. To date, she has done everything well. For her current stage, she is showing both speed and stamina. She is well-winded and although not yet fully extended, shows every indication that she will run out a strong 1600m. The filly is expected to get to the races in April/May. After two or three runs, she would be given a short let-up with the view of heading to the Melbourne spring for the fillies classics.
Matt Cumani will continue to train Urban Royal from his stable in Ballarat. In 12 months, Matt has laid a foundation to quickly become one of Victoria’s top trainers. He has not only enjoyed good success but has developed respect from his peers as a trainer who prepares his horses superbly.
Urban Royal is by Exceed And Excel out of the Zabeel-mare Flouze. She, by any measure, is bred in the purple.
Exceed And Excel has been a huge success both on and off the track. He was an outstanding sprinter, winning the G1 Newmarket Handicap and the G1 Dubai Racing Club Cup (now the Sir Rupert Clarke). His deeds on the track are now surpassed at stud. He is the sire of 10 Group 1 winners in Australia and Europe, including Overreach (Golden Slipper), Guelph, Helmet and Excelebration. In 2016, Exceed And Excel’s service fee was $100,000. He stands at Darley Stud, NSW and he averaged a remarkable $335,000 at the recent Magic Millions sale.
Flouze comes from a top family. A winner and Listed placed, she is the daughter of La Baraka. La Baraka was a Group 1 winner and an outstanding three-year-old. La Baraka is a daughter of Triscay, the best 2yo filly in Australia of her year. Triscay won 5 Group 1 races in her career, including 2 Oaks and 1 Guineas. This is the family of Majestically, Defier and Vintner.
The family continues to perform on today’s stage. Through La Baraka, Flouze is closely related to Astern (G1 Golden Rose winner). Furthermore, the bloodline cross of Exceed And Excel and Zabeel brings together a proven, highly sought after combination.
This filly will prove popular.
