Rising 2yo Colt – Like Father, Like Son

We purchased this rising two-year-old colt from the Inglis Easter Sales earlier in the year. He was targeted for three major reasons:

  1. He was a magnificent colt that had all the attributes of a top racehorse
  2. Murray Baker rated him as the best So You Think in the sale
  3. His vetting process was faultless

Following the purchase, the colt was immediately sent to Murray Baker’s breaker in New Zealand.  As you will see from the videos below, he is quite a stunning individual. Almost black in colour and quite strong in appearance, he already stands at 16hh. With a good scopey ‘long’ body, he has a very athletic walk and a lovely smooth cantering action.

Importantly for a colt, he has a very good nature. At this stage, there does not seem any need to geld this fellow, albeit the challenge may be to keep his weight in order as he ages.

In all, there is little to fault about this lovely staying youngster.

This horse has been bought as a Derby horse. He has all the attributes necessary to be so, particularly conformation and breeding. As a result, once he has had two preparatory races, a plan will be made aimed towards the 2019 Victorian Derby and the New Zealand Derby in the autumn of 2020. (This was effectively the same plan as was used for Vin de Dance, who won the NZ Derby).

Even if he did not make it to the Vic Derby, it would be most beneficial to bring him across to Melbourne as the trip tends accelerate the mental aptitude of the horse to handle the better races.

While it is early days with this colt, we are confident that, given the way he has undergone his early education, he will make it to the top staying races as a three-year-old.

Being by So You Think lays an excellent foundation for this colt to make it as a top staying racehorse. So You Think as a racehorse was a champion. As a stallion, he is heading that way. His credentials for both activities are well documented. It is also evident that his progeny are racing on as older horses, as he did when he went to Europe as a five-year-old.

So You Think had an outstanding autumn as a sire. His three-year-old filly, Sopressa, won the G1 Australasian Oaks at Morphettville and his three-year-old son, D’Argento, took out the G1 Rosehill Guineas. In addition, he now has a stallion son, with 2017 Group 1 winner Inference retiring to stand at Chatswood Stud from this season.

There has also been action aplenty on his dam side. Seasons, a three-year-old filly with Les Bridge in Sydney, is now a multiple city 3yo winner and has not finished worse than 2nd in 4 career starts. In addition, the 2yo half-brother ‘The August’ is undefeated in two race starts for Brent Stanley in Victoria – the second of which came at Flemington on Saturday June 6. He is now seen as a key spring 3yo candidate.

Given his looks and pedigree, there is no doubt that should the colt make it to Group 1 or 2 level, he’ll be of stallion quality to Australian and European markets.

The trainers of this horse are Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman. They need no introduction as they are New Zealand’s premier trainers having won numerous premierships. More importantly from this colt’s point of view, they are top trainers of staying horses with numerous Derbies to their credit. They also have the ability to travel their horses and are invariably active at the major race meetings in Australia.

In recent times, the partnership of Baker and Forsman was successful in winning the NZ Derby for OTI with Vin de Dance. Their stewardship of Vin de Dance has now given that gelding’s owners every chance of having a horse able to run in this year’s Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
